Arriving in Khao Lak for the first time is exciting — but getting around a resort area you don’t know can feel confusing. Unlike Bangkok or Phuket, Khaolak is spread out along a long stretch of coast with no public transport grid. Here’s everything you need to know to get around smoothly.

How Big Is Khaolak?

Khaolak isn’t a single village — it’s a collection of beach communities spread over roughly 30 kilometres of coastline in Phang Nga province. The main areas include Nang Thong, Bang Niang, Pakarang Beach, Khuk Khak, and Bang Sak. Most hotels are within a few kilometres of each other, but walking between areas isn’t practical.

Getting Around Khaolak: Your Options

Private Taxi

Songthaew (Shared Pick-Up Truck)

Motorbike Rental

Many resorts and rental shops offer motorbikes for around 200–300 THB per day. Good if you’re comfortable riding in Thailand and don’t have much luggage. Note that Thai roads require a valid international licence for motorbikes, and insurance coverage can be patchy.

Car Rental

Renting a car gives you freedom to explore at your own pace. It’s worth considering if you’re staying a week or more and planning multiple day trips. Most rental companies require an international driving licence.
